URA Releases Finalised Landmark and Gateway Plan

The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) launched a public exhibition of The Landmark and Gateway Plan in September 2000, presenting ideas to create a more distinctive, exciting and memorable cityscape. The plan identified landmark sites and focal points of activity for safeguarding, as well as gateways into the city and significant vistas within the city to be protected. The exhibition also explored ideas on how we could break new ground to create buildings and spaces of outstanding architecture.

The plan was exhibited to obtain feedback from the public and the building industry on the proposals and what could be done to turn the plan into reality. The Plan sparked off much lively discussion in the press and over the internet, illustrating the extent of public interest. The Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA) also held a seminar for its members.

URA has taken into account the feedback received when reviewing the plan. We are glad to announce that the plan has been finalised.

Feedback Received

Public response to Plan was positive, and the respondents generally endorsed all the sites and views proposed. URA also received an array of valuable feedback, including various suggestions on additional gateways, landmark sites, focal points and view corridors in the city centre. As a result, two gateway sites, four landmark sites, five focal points, and three vistas have been added to the final plan.

The majority of respondents also felt that having design competitions would help ensure quality landmark buildings. URA is studying how this mechanism can be implemented.

The stage is now set for a more distinctive - and unique - cityscape.
