1.

Number of Names

Each development can have only one name. However, in exceptional cases, different names may be given to different parts of the development. Such applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

2.

Large Scale Development

A large-scale development site containing plots for individual developments within it may be given an overall name. The individual developments within that estate may then be given individual names upon application by the respective developer(s). (e.g. Sentosa Cove, Biopolis)

3.

Internal Names

Internal names may be given by Management Corporations/Owners solely for internal identification purposes (e.g. names of different blocks within a condominium). Such internal names need not be approved by the Board.

4.

Generic Names

No party may be given exclusive right to use any generic name, unless the name is a registered trade name of the requesting party.

5.

Chinese Names

  1. Applicant can apply both English and Chinese name in the same application. Alternatively, applicant can apply for the Chinese name at a later date, after the approval for the English building name.

  2. Applicant can apply for Chinese name only if the building has an approved English name.

6.

Names to avoid

  1. Names which give a misrepresentation of the place and the type of development.

  2. Names which infringe on the trade names or trademarks of other parties.

  3. Names which may be deemed controversial or offensive.

  4. Names comprising ‘THE’ and the generic names of streets. e.g. ‘The Scotts’.

  5. Avoid using names of persons, living or dead, unless for special reasons.

  6. Avoid using names of national institutions/symbols, public office and international organizations such as Singapore, National, Raffles, Merlion, ASEAN.

7.

A good name

  • Fit the location and environment of the development.

  • Fit the size of the development.

  • Avoid confusion with another development in another part of Singapore.

  • Retain the history of the building or the area.

  • Names should be kept reasonably short, easy to pronounce, easy to spell and easy to remember.

8.

Number and Symbol

  1. The form of the number (ie. word, numeral or Roman numeral) may be interchanged without referring to the Board.

  2. A number must be at the end of the building name unless it is used with the generic street name and reflects the building address (e.g. ‘One Fullerton’ is the building name of 1 Fullerton Road).

  3. 'And’ and ‘&‘ may be interchanged without referring to the Board.

  4. ‘At’ and ‘@’ may be interchanged without referring to the Board.

9.
