Quality Restoration & Annual URA Architectural Heritage Awards

Quality restoration goes beyond simply preserving a facade or the external shell of a building. It must retain the inherent spirit and ambience of the building. To achieve this requires an appreciation and understanding of the architecture and structure of traditional buildings, and a good amount of outstanding management and practice.

The fundamental hallmarks of any quality restoration, irrespective of scale and complexity, are the three `R's:

maximum Retention

sensitive Restoration

careful Repair

The Practice of Preservation and Conservation

All preservation and conservation works are carried out at seven levels. These varies from project to project. In order of complexity, they are:

  • Maintaining the essential character of the building
  • Preventing further deterioration
  • Consolidating the fabric of the building
  • Restoring the building to original design and material
  • Rehabilitating the building without destroying its character
  • Replacing missing significant features of the building
  • Rebuilding severely damaged parts of the building
  • The preferred sequence for restoring a building is the "Top-Down" Approach. It starts from the top (roof), and work downwards while retaining the floor(s) and roof. This method ensures that:

    The building remains structurally stable.

Work can proceed under all weather conditions.

Deterioration due to weather is minimised.
